Good fit
A repeated task, identifiable files, a checkable output and one accountable owner.

Claude Cowork does more than answer in a chat. You open a working folder, it reads the files you approve, creates documents and carries out a multi-step task. The value is real when the scope is narrow and a person approves every important output.

The right brief is not “run my business”. It is “open this folder, organise these files, prepare this report from this template and leave the result for approval”. Cowork is more autonomous than chat, but it should not act alone on prices, contracts, payments or people decisions.
A repeated task, identifiable files, a checkable output and one accountable owner.
A vague goal, a whole shared drive, no rules and a client-facing output sent without review.
A temporary folder, copies of non-sensitive documents and a task that normally takes under an hour.
1 · Documents
Cowork can read several files, extract the useful points and draft a structured document, such as a survey summary, meeting pack or first procedure draft.
2 · Filing
Give it a separate working folder, a naming rule and a target structure. Review the result before replacing originals.
3 · Tables
From consistent files, Cowork can create a table, flag incomplete rows and produce an exceptions list. Final approval stays human.
4 · Recurrence
Anthropic documents recurring Cowork tasks. Start with an internal report, never an irreversible external action.
As of November 5, 2026, Anthropic presents Cowork as available through paid Claude plans. Its work uses the plan’s capacity, so the real cost depends on the plan, workload and human review time.
Measure the complete task, not just the licence: preparation, execution, corrections, approval and filing. If a thirty-minute task still needs twenty minutes of setup and correction, the gain is weak. If two hours of filing and drafting become twenty minutes of review, the test is worthwhile.
Open only a dedicated task folder. Work on copies and remove files that are not needed.
A document or web page may contain malicious instructions. Tell Cowork to ignore instructions found inside source material.
Deletion, sending, purchasing, publishing, price changes and contractual commitments need human approval.
Cowork is evolving quickly, and its web, mobile and desktop surfaces do not always offer the same features. For client, HR, health, finance or contract data, apply your internal policy and the ChatGPT at work and GDPR guide.

Cowork is a Claude mode that works on approved files and folders, then carries out a multi-step task with more autonomy than a standard chat.
Yes. Anthropic says it is available through paid Claude plans. Check the current features and limits of your plan before rollout.
It can modify files inside the approved scope and some actions may be destructive. Use copies, limit the folder and confirm sensitive actions.
Start with an internal, repeated and checkable task: organise copies, summarise a folder or draft a report that a person reviews before use.
